Yesterday, 4th February was World Cancer Day, and this year cancer charities, including Movember have been trying to dispel the myths and misconceptions about cancer.
Last November the Intercounty's Movember team took part in supporting Movember, raising over £2,600 by growing several different types of moustaches, including The Trucker, The Rock Star, Box Car and Undercover Brother.
Here are some facts about cancer:
1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer will afflict 1 in 10 men. Without intervention, 84 million people will die from cancer by 2015, with the majority of that burden falling on poorer countries and socioeconomic classes.
Even though 30-40% of cancers can be prevented, and one-third of cancers can be cured through early diagnosis and treatment, cancer remains the world's leading cause of death, killing more people than AIDS, malaria, and TB combined.
Here are a few steps to begin taking on the cancer commitment:
• Make regular visits to your doctor
• Make sure you keep active
• Eat a healthy diet
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Try to manage stress
• Alcohol – have no more than two drinks per day
