Spring is truly in the air and it’s at this time of year that most of us will be thinking about doing some gardening. If you have just moved and are thinking about a bit of a redesign, here are some pointers to guide you in the right direction.
Plan - with everything in life the more you plan something the more chance you will be in achieving your goal. Decide what type of garden design you would like - for example minimal, jungle, living wall, lots of paving, outdoor living areas etc. When thinking about the planting then you need to consider other aspects such as what type of soil you have - alkaline or acid, clay or peaty in full sun or shady - start by buying a test kit to find out what type of soil you have and then take a look at the orientation of your garden to work out which plants will be best for your space.
Design - After you have decided what you would like draw out a plan of your garden to scale by measuring from one end to the other and then with a pencil draw in areas of hard landscaping and plants on your plan, taking into consideration any trees that you are going to keep. Gardena offers a free easy garden planner https://www.gardena.com/int/garden-life/garden-planner/ or take a look at Google earth and print out a copy of the aerial view.
Once you have taken into account all of the above you can then start to add in your plants and flowers - this is the enjoyable part.
