How to choose the perfect sofa

One of the most expensive purchases for a new home is a sofa, and with so many different types available it can be hard to decide which one will suit your home. There are love seats – large armchairs, arm chairs, small sofas, footstalls, corner sofas, traditional, contemporary it’s great to have so much choice but can make buying a new sofa a bit of a mind field.

The best way to tackle buying seating for your living room is to think about what your needs are as a family, not forgetting that you will need extra seating when you have guests. There is nothing worse than having an oversized sofa in a small lounge, as it can make the room feel very cramped and appear smaller.

Think about what type of material you would like, fabric, wool, leather, the latter can be quite cold in winter, whether you buy one with washable or fitted covers are also a consideration.

It might seem a bit lengthy but if you measure your room and create free on-line CAD version, like SweetHome 3D you can insert your room dimensions, adding furniture and then create a 3D model, it really will help you to plan your space efficiently.

Legs on sofas are also really important, do you want your sofa to have legs, this style of sofa works well in a small room as it will extend the floor space, making the room appear larger. If you have a limited space think about choosing a sofa with a smaller depth. Sofas with high backs are more comfortable on the neck.

Traditional sofas tend to be more expensive but these are often made by hand and the frame and springs will be good quality so they will last longer. Love seats are really good if you have a compact space to fill such as an alcove.

Once you have decided on what type of seating you would like for your home, visit some of the sofa showrooms, so that you can get an idea of the quality as well as the look. Make sure that you check for finishing and take a look at the legs and frame.  It’s very difficult to choose sofas on-line as you can’t test them out, even if you look in a showroom and then choose one on line you will have a much better idea of what type of furniture you would like.

Before you choose a sofa company make sure you check out on-line reviews.
