It’s a well known fact that most of us find it difficult to switch off enough to fall asleep easily, so when we spotted this article in the Daily Mail “Fall asleep in 60 seconds” we thought we would take a look. It’s called the 4-7-8 breathing technique Dr Andrew Weill. This new technique is called the 'natural tranquiliser for the nervous system.'

So how does it work, according to the havard-trained doctor you need to follow these steps over several weeks in order to master the fall asleep in 60 seconds:

• Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
• Now hold your breath for a count of seven.
• After this time has elapsed, exhale completely through your mouth, making another whoosh sound for eight second in one large breath.
• Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three times for a total of four breaths.

Making sure that you breathe in quietly in and exhale loudly – a similar technique used in pilates and yoga in order to relax. Other advice Dr Weill’s gives is to keep the tip of your tongue still during the breathing excercises. After a few weeks of mastering this technique Weill’s states that it will have a positive impact on your daily life as it helps anxiety.

If you combine these breathing techniques with the colour of your bedroom then hopefully you will get the perfect night’s sleep, check out our article Colours That Help You To Get The Best Night's Sleep...
