August – What Do We Need To Be Doing In The Garden?

August 21st 2012
By: Melanie

Everything has taken slightly longer to come out and grow this summer due to the amount of rain we have had this year, however these are the things you need to be doing in the garden this August:

Trim lavender, so it doesn’t go woody the following year.

Sort out your soil, your soil will probably be in a pretty poor state, especially after all the rain we have experienced would have washed away all of the nutrients. Try covering bare soil with compost, leaf mould or mulches.

Collect seeds for eating or replanting

Harvest early apples and prune

If you have a vegetable patch, tie up tomatoes if falling over, collect garlic, thin out new lettuces for winter salads and watch out for blight.

Finally, enjoy as we only have a couple of months before we start to feel the autumn chill set in in the evenings.
