A recent Nationwide survey revealed that house prices in the UK rose by 0.6% last month and prices were up by 0.9% compared with the same month a year earlier, making the average home worth £162,712.

The Bank of England have also reported that mortgage approvals have reached a 25 month high.

Mr Gardener, chief economist at Nationwide stated: 'Evidence that house prices picked up a little in February follows a series of data releases suggesting that economic conditions may not be quite as weak as feared after the UK economy contracted in the final quarter of 2011.’
