This autumn Channel 4 are celebrating the 100th episode of its hugely popular building series Grand Designs with Kevin Mc Cloud. The series which offers an eclectic mix of small and large house designs, has left Kevin feeling that there is simply too much glass and modern technology in new homes for his liking.

Kevin, who recently created a shed in a bit of rural England in a new series called An Eco Cabin, engaged with all things re-cycled and has now decided that he is a big fan of gloom, he told the Daily Telegraph: “Most of the Grand Designs homes I visit are too big and too bright. I don’t enjoy living in a white box flooded with light. I like shadows, small spaces, old furniture.”

In Grand Designs series 1, Ben Law’s woodland house was voted one of the most popular homes on the show by viewers, and was also an inspiration to Kevin when designing his woodland retreat, to see Ben’s home visit his Woodland house website.

In 2011, one in 10 new homes in the UK were built by private individuals, and in total 14,000 new homes in total. They were also cheaper to construct, a three to four bedroom home costs on average £80,000 cheaper than using a commercial construction company.
