Annexe, Acre and Garage - the most popular search terms for house buyers

Over the past year annexes have become more and more popular, and as a consequence search terms such as ‘annexe,’ ‘acre’ and ‘garage' have increased over the past year. This is because according to the property portal Rightmove only 2% of properties for sale on their site come with an annexe.*

So why the increase in popularity? 

The Managing Director of Intercounty, Andrew Gilchrist commented “Any property in short supply can always command a premium. We have seen properties with annexes become more popular as house buyers are demanding different types of living choices. Such as having a place for grown-up children to come home to after studying, “the boomerang generation” which offers its own independence of having a separate living accommodation, but still saves money on them having to pay out rent whilst trying to save up to buy a house. 

“ On the other end of the scale the multi-generation property, ie an annexe is a good option for ageing parents who need to be cared for but cannot afford expensive care homes. This type of property can offer so many different options to an expanding and growing family such as a place for children to hang out, a home office, place for a gym, a rental property to help top up an income - the list is endless, that’s why they are so popular.”

Another search term popular with property buyers is ‘garage’ that’s because they are popular to house a car which Rightmove says “that’s because we are a Nation of car lovers.”
