The name Royston came from a cross, known by several names including Royse’s, Rohesia’s or Roisia’s Cross, which were erected in the crossroads at some time in the past. By the 14th Century the town was called Royston, not to be confused with the village of Roydon.
In recent years Royston Arts Festival has been revived and this takes places in the last week of September or the first week in October in the town hall, this is an excellent opportunity to look at work from local artists. There are also several clubs including 40’s dance workshop.
A short distance from Royston is Wimpole Hall House gardens and farm set in 2,500 acres of rolling parkland and woodland. The Hall is a magnificent country house, mainly eighteenth century in style. The farm is a working farm and houses some of largest selection of rare breeds in East Anglia. Duxford Imperial War Museum is also within striking distance of Royston, and makes a great family day out.
