Top Gardening Tips For March

March 7th 2013
By: Melanie

Spring typically arrives by the middle of March and the increase in sunlight and warmth affords us the chance to get back into our gardens and get on with some gardening. This month is the time to start preparing your seed beds and cut back any remaining winter shrubs. Here are the top 10 jobs that you should tackle in your garden this month:

  • Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes
  • Protect any new spring shoots from slugs
  • Plant your summer flowering bulbs
  • Top dress containers with fresh compost
  • If necessary, dig out the lawnmower and trim back your lawn
  • Trim dogwood and willow grown for colourful stems
  • Be on your guard for any weeds – if spotted make sure you deal with them very quickly
  • Remove any pond heaters and begin to restart the pond fountain and feed the fish
  • On warm days remember to open your greenhouse or conservatory doors and vents
