If you are looking ways reduce your family's weekly food bill, and perhaps even your waistline, then have you considered calculating the amount of food you eat.

This might seem obvious but by reducing our portion sizes it might enable us to keep within the recommended daily calorie intake. The NHS (National Health Service), state that the average male needs approximately 2,500 calories per day to keep to a constant weight and 2,200 for women.

So we decided to check out the Love food hate waste website, where they have developed a food calculator to help you to keep track of the amount of food you consume, this will not only help you to reduce your food bills but also your food waste.

The calculator allows you to put in the type of food you are going to eat from a list of the most popular foods, then how many of you are going to eat it, the calculator then gives you the amount of food you will need to cook. So for example if you choose to cook a roast dinner with beef, roast potatoes, carrot and peas for two adults and two children it will give you the portion quantities you will need, approximately 340g of beef, 320g of carrots, 6 heaped tablespoons of peas and 16 small potatoes.

The calculator is not only good for family meals but also for party food portions, first choose the duration of your party, from under 1 hour to up to 4 hours and then it then gives you various food choices depending on the amount of time it is running for.
