Mulled wine really does conjure up the spirit of Christmas, the smell of nutmeg and cinnamon so reminiscent of Christmas’ gone by, and that lovely warming feeling it gives us on a cold winters day.

Originally introduced by the Romans, this warm red wine with spices was very popular during Victorian times and has remained a celebrated Christmas drink ever since, so if you would like to have a go at creating you own Mulled wine this Christmas here is our recipe:

You will need:

1 bottle of red wine
1 cinnamon stick
60g/2oz of brown sugar, white will do if that is all you have in your cupboards
Sprinkle of grated nutmeg
500ml Orange juice
1 orange, or you can use a tangerine as well
1 bay leaf
200ml of brandy

Method:

Simply add all of the ingredients to a saucepan, gently bringing to the boil, once it is boiling turn down the heat and simmer for around 15 minutes, and then taste, you might need to add some more sugar at this stage if its not sweet enough.

Another alternative is to buy ready made Mulled wine sachets, available from most supermarkets, which already come with all the herbs and spices you will need.
