Families Throw On Average £56 Of Good Food Away Per Month…

According to WRAP, the Waste Action Programme we throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food every year in the UK, and over half of this waste, 61%, is avoidable, which means that 4.4 million tonnes of waste doesn’t need to be thrown away. The cost of this waste is £12 billion per year, around £680 per family per year, or £56 per month.

So we decided to look into an iPhone app which has been designed to help to reduce food waste by managing what you have stored in your fridge, freezer or cupboards. The app will manage the safe storage of the life of individual items, even home cooked meals, and it will let you know when they are getting close to expiry.

You will be able to scan in any shop bought items including fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, cans and jars and then the app will let you know when they are about to expire. You can even use it for your cosmetics.

The app then lists foods by location, whether they are in the fridge, freezer or cupboards. As it’s sometimes difficult to see the contents of a package once it has been in the freezer you can also buy special consume stickers that you can use with the app, at £1.99 per 150 unique coded stickers.

The stickers will enable you to check what the items is, whether it is still safe to eat, how long it has been open and when you need to eat it by.

However if you don’t have an iPhone or apps just aren’t your thing then you can always check out the Love Food Hate Waste website, full of money and waste reducing ideas.
