A visit to the Medieval market town of Thaxted is like stepping back in time, the cobbled streets and timber framed buildings some dating back to the Saxon period are a stunning example of English architecture.
Situated in the heart of the beautiful Essex countryside close to Saffron Walden and Dunmow and around 25 minutes from both Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford, it has everything one can need from a good selection of shops, cafes and public transport and has been a hub of commerce for the past 1000 years. Some of the streets still have ancient descriptive names such as Fishmarket Street, Town Street, Orange Street, Weaverhead Lane, The Tanyard and Stoney Lane, which are all unique to this pretty town.
In the 13th Century the town first prospered and rapidly grew in size thanks to the cutlery industry. The main street on Thaxted is dominated by the Guild Hall a very striking Tudor building once used as the town’s administrative centre, still open to visitors.
If you would like to sample a taste of living in this beautiful market town then here is a unique opportunity to rent a Grade I listed cottage thought to date back to around 1410, it is set on one of the delightful cobbled streets.
