About the Town

Westhoughton is situated about 4 miles south west of Bolton and is made up of several villages, which have their own distinctive character, traditions and amenities. Historically a part of Lancashire, it was once a centre for mining, cotton-spinning and textile manufacture. However, today it is popular residential town for commuters to Bolton, Preston, Manchester and Wigan. Westhoughton benefits from excellent road and rail links with the M61 running along the northern boundary and train stations at Westhoughton and Daisy Hill. There are nine local schools for various age groups, numerous leisure facilities and a wide variety of shops within the town centre, which also has market days on Thursday and Saturday. The Middlebrook retail park is also close by. Westhoughton has over 10,000 residential properties and has a good selection of different types of homes at competitive prices. There is a particularly good proportion of property suitable for families with children. A town carnival is held annually in the park, and a procession of floats designed by local residents and organisations drives around the town, ending up in the park, which contains craft stalls, entertainment and a fair. Central Park and Carnegie Hall connections with New York resulted in a failed twinning but there is a wealth of history and heritage in Westhoughton and the commuter links make it a very popular residential area and a desirable place to settle in Lancashire.
