About the Town

Morley is a Market Town and Civil Parish within the metropolitan borough of the City of Leeds, in West Yorkshire, England. It lies approximately 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Leeds City Centre. Together with Drighlington, Gildersome, Churwell, Tingley and East/West Ardsley, the town has a population of over 30,000. The town is built on seven hills, like Rome: Scatcherd Hill, Dawson Hill, Daisy Hill, Chapel Hill, Hunger Hill, Troy Hill and Banks Hill. The town enjoys a relatively central location just off the M62 motorway, which allows good access to Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield, yet the open countryside of the Pennines and Yorkshire Moors are only a 20 -30 minute drive away. Morley, mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as Morelege, Morelei and Moreleia, is traditionally famous for its textile industry, notably the cloth "Shoddy", which was worn by both sides in the American Civil. Notable people associated with the town include Comedian Ernie Wise, British Prime Minister H H Asquith and Celebrity Chef Brian Turner. Schools and Colleges are of good reputation and shopping is diverse with the broad range of town centre shops, three supermarkets – ASDA, MORRISONS and SAINSBURYS as well as the WHITE ROSE SHOPPING CENTRE all with 2 miles of the centre.
