About the Town

Bolton is one of the largest towns in England and is an integral part of the Manchester City region. Bolton tourism and cultural assets are all easily accessible due to its motorway links (M6/60/61/62) and extensive railway network. Set on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, Bolton covers 54 square miles and has a population of 265,000. Over 50% of the area is countryside and we have over 200 miles of public footpaths and cycle ways. Bolton has a rich heritage which is reflected in its attractions and architecture with 600 individual buildings listed as being of special architectural or historical interest. Smithills Hall and Hall i’th Wood have manor houses dating back to the 14th and 15th century and Bolton is also the home of the inventor of the spinning mule, Samuel Crompton. To the west of Bolton is the Middlebrook development boasting the Reebok stadium and Bolton Arena which is a nationally significant sports and conference facility. The town centre houses the renowned Bolton Museum, Art Gallery and Aquarium and also contains a diverse and continually improving shopping experience with 5 markets and numerous shopping centres and retail parks which are home to many big name brands. The town’s distinctiveness and sense of place helps ensure Bolton’s place as one of the most popular places to live and also to visit in the North West. Bolton has a highly diverse and cosmopolitan resident base with a very strong kinship and economic relationship within its community and is certainly worthy of the ‘Bolton Family’ essence and values.
