About the Town

Bishop’s Stortford is an ancient market town, situated on the county border, between Hertfordshire and Essex. Included in the Doomsday book, as Esterteferd, the town was later sold to the Bishop of London and became known as Bishop’s Esterteferd which later became Bishop’s Stortford.

The town flourished throughout the Middle Ages, gaining further importance as a staging post on the mail coach route between London and Cambridge, and prosperity was further enhanced by the opening of the Stort to navigation. Finally the connection to the Railway laid the foundations for Bishop’s Stortford’s present position as a thriving market town and favoured commuter area for London.

Today, the town still includes many 16th and 17th century buildings and the remnants of a Norman Castle. There is a thriving High Street, with plenty of good restaurants and pubs, along with a cinema, health club, bowling alley and nightclubs. The area is rightly proud of the variety and excellent of its schools, which consistently achieve impressive Ofsted ratings. Numerous hotels and guest houses in and around Bishop’s Stortford cater for not only visitors and tourists in the town, but also those flying in and out of London Stansted Airport, which is situated about 4 miles to the east of the town. In 2009, the population was 38,000. Despite further growth being inevitable, both Town and District Council are adamant that Bishop’s Stortford will not lose its identity as a traditional market town in which the quality of life of its people is the paramount consideration.
